Our Ship

An Active Program

Ship 1942 was founded in 1992 and is one of the most active ships in the Northern Virginia metropolitan area as well as the entire East Coast of the United States, easily spending 50 to 60 days on the water.

Youth Led

Ship 1942 is sponsored by St. George's Episcopal Church in Arlington, Virginia, which owns our boats, gives us space for meetings, and provides moral support. Our program focuses on sailing skills, safety, navigation, and boat maintenance, striving to let the youth lead the activities and make the decisions to the fullest extent possible, with support from a strong cadre of experienced adult leaders.

Broadest Program Possible

Sea Scout Ship 1942, which is part of the BSA National Capital Area Council (NCAC), is also chartered in two other scouting programs to provide the broadest range of scouting. We are, as part of the Girl Scout Council of the Nation's Capital (GSCNC), a stand-alone Girl Scout Mariner Ship (Ship 486) that is a high-adventure nautical program for Cadette and Senior Girl Scouts (ages 13 and above). Scouts BSA Troop 1942 is also part of our nautical scouting program, for boys and girls ages 13 and above, who like boating and water activities but are too young to register as a Sea Scout. Scouts can get their feet wet in Sea Scouting AND continue their Scout advancement. We also have chartered Venture Crew 1942 which brings in many land component high-adventure activities like back-packing, mountain-biking, shooting sports, canoeing, etc.
